3 Former BNP Leaders Announced ‘Independent’ Elections in Bogra

Three former leaders of BNP have announced independent elections from three constituencies in Bogra in the 12th National Assembly elections. They have already collected the nomination papers from the Election Commission. Prothom Aloke has confirmed that at least two of them will contest the elections from Bangladesh Nationalist Movement (BNM) or Trinamool BNP.

Bogra District Election Officer Mahmud Hasan confirmed the fact of collecting the nomination papers of the three leaders. They are former member of the central committee of BNP and prominent businessman Mohammad Shokarana; Sarkar Badal, former president of Sadar Upazila BNP and former chairman of Shajahanpur Upazila Parishad and Beauty Begum, former women’s affairs secretary of district BNP and former vice chairman of Shibganj Upazila Parishad.

Mohammad Shokrana has announced to be an independent candidate from Bogra-1 Constituency (Sariakandi-Sonatala). Sarkar Badal has filed nomination papers to contest as an independent candidate in Bogra-7 (Gabatli-Shajahanpur) seat. Beauty Begum will be elected from Bogra-2 (Shibganj) seat. There are rumors that Sarkar Badal and Beauty Begum are running for election from BNM. However, Sarkar Badal and Mohammad Shokrana said they will hold independent elections.

According to local sources, in 2008, Mohammad Shokrana was defeated in Bogra-1 seat by wearing the symbol of paddy. He voluntarily resigned from BNP on October 9, 2019. Shokarana, who is known to be close to BNP Acting Chairman Tariq Rahman, wrote in his resignation letter, “I resigned from all positions of the party due to personal and family reasons. From now on I have no relation with BNP.’

According to sources, Shokrana, who was the leader of Bogra during the establishment of Jubo League, joined BNP in 1999 by handing flowers to Tarek Rahman. He later served in various important positions in the district BNP and later became a member of the party’s central committee. A case was filed against Shokrana in 2007 for allegedly hoarding relief blankets in the much-discussed dal scam during the caretaker government. On February 12 of the same year, joint forces seized 5.5 metric tonnes (18,000 sacks) of lentils and a large amount of relief blankets from 15 warehouses in Shokrana. He was also arrested at that time. The trial of the case started in the special tribunal court, but the case was withdrawn on 21 November 2011 after Awami League came to power. There are various discussions in the area regarding the withdrawal of the BNP leader’s case during the Awami League period.

Mohammad Shokrana told Prothom Alo, “Since BNP is not coming to the elections, why will the Awami League go to rig the elections?” The vote will be transparent. Will the BNP election be rigged? When asked, he said, “Maybe.” However, I will not be an independent candidate if the BNP comes to the polls. I will seek nomination from BNP. He said about the discussed case, “It was not a relief blanket. Tariq Rahman bought blankets with his own money and kept them in my warehouse for distribution among the needy. Apart from this, I imported 16 crore worth of pulses from abroad and kept them in the warehouse. The joint forces seized blankets and pulses by mistake.

Sarkar Badal joined the BNP in the early nineties. In 2003, he became the president of Sadar Upazila BNP. Later, when Shajahanpur upazila was formed with some parts of Sadar upazila, in 2014 he was elected chairman of Shajahanpur upazila parishad with the support of BNP. In 2018, he did not seek BNP nomination for Bogra-7 seat. Last in 2022, in the by-election of Bogra-6 (Sadar) seat, he went beyond the party decision and elected as an independent.

Sarkar Badal told Prothom Alo that although he served as the president of Sadar Upazila BNP, he was cornered in the party due to some leaders. Was in BNP, still is. But time will tell whether he will stay in the future or not. Regarding the election on BNM’s nomination, he said, ‘I have received an offer from Trinamool BNP and BNM. I haven’t decided yet. I am preparing for the election as an independent candidate.

Beauty Begum was the women’s affairs secretary of the district BNP. In 2014, he was elected vice chairman of Shibganj Upazila Parishad with the support of the party. In 2018, he was expelled from BNP when he disobeyed the party decision and ran for the post of upazila chairman.

Beauty Begum told Prothom Alo, “For now, I have decided to contest the election as an independent candidate. Many parties are contacting us, let’s see, time will tell.

District BNP president Rezaul Karim Badsha told Prothom Alo that BNP will not participate in any farce election under the current government. A one-phase movement is going on demanding the resignation of Sheikh Hasina and the cancellation of the election schedule. Those who have submitted nomination papers or will submit nomination papers in defiance of the party decision are not members of the party; They have no affiliation with the party.
