Over a hundred workers of a factory were injured in a rush during the earthquake in Comilla

During the earthquake in Comilla’s Chouddagram, more than a hundred workers were injured by being trampled while leaving the factory in a panic. The incident took place in a garment factory named Amir Shirt in the Chupua area of Upazila on Saturday morning. Three of the injured people have been sent to Comilla Medical College Hospital.

The earthquake was felt in different parts of the country, including the capital, Dhaka, at 9:35 a.m. today. Rabiul Haque, the officer in charge of the Dhaka Meteorological Office, told Prothom Alo that the place of origin of the earthquake was Ramganj Upazila in Laxmipur. The magnitude of the earthquake was 5.6 on the Richter scale. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS, the epicenter of the earthquake is eight kilometers east and northeast of Ramganj Upazila.

Injured patients, eyewitnesses, and hospital sources said that during the earthquake, the workers of the clothing factory called Amir Shirt started running around in panic. At least a hundred workers were injured by being trampled and jumping from the top while rushing down. Eyewitnesses said that no one could come out because the gate was closed at that time.

On receiving the information, police, fire service personnel, and local people rescued the injured and brought them to Chauddagram Upazila Health Complex. Three of them have been sent to Comilla Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. Apart from this, many have received treatment at different clinics and locally.

Chattagram Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Golam Kibria said they provided medical services to 80 garment workers who were injured while running around in fear of the earthquake. Among them, Saheda, Ayesha, and an unidentified woman have been sent to Comilla Medical College Hospital for better treatment.

Amir Shirt Garments Assistant Vice President (AVP) Kazi Md. Yusuf and Senior Vice President (SVP) Shahjahan Saju said their factory has three buildings. One of them is administrative, and the other two are for production. 1,700 workers work on four floors of two production buildings. The building has adequate provision for lifts. However, the workers were injured while running away due to the fear of the earthquake. However, they denied that the gate was closed.

Chauddagram Station Officer of Fire Service Mehedi Hasan said that after receiving the news of the accident, they went to the spot rescued the injured persons, and arranged to send them to Chauddagram Upazila Health Complex.
