Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the US had a “historic responsibility” to ensure a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. He made this comment in a phone conversation with US President Joe Biden.
In the telephone conversation, Erdogan also warned of the “negative regional and global consequences” of the Gaza conflict. According to AFP, the two leaders spoke on the phone for the first time since the conflict between Hamas and Israel broke out on October 7.
After the phone conversation with Biden, Turkey’s Presidency Office said in a statement, President Erdoğan said – the increase in the intensity of Israeli attacks and the prolongation of the conflict may cause negative regional and global consequences. Only a withdrawal of US unconditional support for Israel can guarantee a quick ceasefire.
President Erdogan has been one of the Muslim world’s most vocal critics of Israel’s military aggression in Gaza. He referred to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as the “butcher of Gaza” and called Israel a “terrorist state.”.
