A private car was completely gutted after a fire broke out on the ground floor of a nine-storey commercial building in Barisal Nagar. A fire broke out in a shopping mall named ‘Fatema Center’ on Sadar Road in the city around 8 pm on Thursday. Five units of the fire service brought the fire under control after an hour.
According to trade authorities, there was a private car and 10 motorcycles in the parking lot at the time of the fire. The motorcycles were saved as they were evacuated immediately after the car caught fire. It is believed that the fire started from the gas cylinder of the car.
Some eyewitnesses said that a fire suddenly broke out in the parking lot of the business at around eight o’clock in the night. At this time, when black smoke spread around, the traders and buyers of the market started running in panic. On receiving information, five units of fire service reached the spot and brought the fire under control around 9 pm after an hour of efforts.
Businessmen of the market said that suddenly they saw smoke coming out of the parking area of the building and informed the fire service. The nine-storied building has at least 30 shops and an ATM booth on the fourth floor. After the fire, all the shops in the market were closed for safety.
Barisal Fire Service Senior Station Officer Rabiul Al Amin told Prothom Alo that how the fire started cannot be said before the investigation. They are working to assess the damage. Barisal Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner Fazlul Karim said that the situation is now under control.
